Demand avoidance is not wilful
Updated: Dec 5, 2024
This is the closest I have got to being able to explain demand avoidance … bear with me.
Have you ever been burnt by spattering oil? Yes… now imagine that you have your hand over a pan of sizzling oil and you are asked to put your hand in it or even right over it… your brain simply won’t allow it.
No amount of cajoling, reassurance, enticement, encouragement will make your brain allow it… you could even be trying to push your hand in with your other hand in some farcical left/right battle with your brain…. but, nope! It’s just not going in …
That is how demand avoidant brain chemistry perceives many demands; self imposed or otherwise… no matter how much the cognitive, rational side of the brain tries to convince itself that it’s okay… it simply can not comply.
